Alta Vista

Although Alta Vista has been around for a while it doesn't have the popularity of other search engines such as Yahoo, Ask, and Google. Alta Vista has an edge over the competition because it allows you to search in all languages. You can also use Alta Vista to search in English and Spanish only. Another thing that makes Alta Vista unique is that it is the only search engine I have found with a dedicated music search. This gives instant access to the latest hits and your favorite music.

The cons of Alta Vista are simple. Because it offers so much, Alta Vista tends to be more slow than other engines. It is also not as precise. It can take time to find the right answers among numerous results. I would recommend Alta Vista to anyone who is interested in international studies.

Blog Commentaries

Corporate

It was announced today on Google's official blog that a new version of their web browser, Chrome, was released for Mac. The new release includes features such as the ability to sync your bookmarks with other Apple devices. The new version of Chrome is available directly through Google or as an update for existing Chrome users.

In my opinion Google launching a new version of its flagship browser, Chrome, is a good thing. The number of Mac users in the nation is growing. It is important that leading technology companies do what they can to adjust to this demand.

Music

Yahoo Music has announced on their blog that they have released an app of their popular Yahoo Music Stream for the iPod Touch and iPhone. The app itself will give access to more than 20 genres of music. Users will be allowed to skip up to six songs an hour. You will also be able to share songs with friends, buy songs from iTunes, or listen to local radios stations or CBS Music affiliates using the GPS feature.

People are always looking for ways to take their music on the go. The iPod and iPhone are two of the most popular gadgets today. Yahoo has now given consumers an easier way to access their favorite music.

Personal

In her blog, Riding the Short Bus, Kat has an article about a Louisville, Ohio man who for some reason decided to tattoo the letter A on a one year old's behind. The man in question apparently did not have permission from the child's mother to do so. He is in custody on one count of endangering a child. The suspects grandmother doesn't feel that it is right because it is just a tiny tattoo. Being a substitute teacher herself, the author has some interesting insight on the matter.

Educational

The Dummy Essentials blog is an easy to read blog that breaks technology down into layman's terms very well. In one of the first posts the anonymous author describes the importance of having only one antivirus on their PC. Any computer technician will tell you antivirus is an essential key to keeping your computer working properly. Having more than one antivirus can make both programs conflict with each other causing neither one to function properly. This of course leaves the user vulnerable. He also explains how multiple antivirus programs sometimes see each other as threats. There are many other posts on here and the author's post on Windows 7 suggests they will stay with the current technology.

Political

An article on CNN's website talks about the hectic schedule former president Bill Clinton had before having his emergency surgery. The president was in the midst of working with the relief efforts for the victims of the Hatian earthquake. He had been hospitalized on Thursday in New York, complaining of chest pains. Two stints were placed in the former president's heat. The blog post is just another way CNN is offering coverage of people helping this horrible disaster.

Apple's Ipad

According to an article in PC World Online edition, Apple's new Ipad is being compared more to an over sized iPod Touch or iPhone rather than a downsized Mac. This may be due to the popularity both of these gadgets are already seeing in the marketplace today. The main advantage of this would be that the iPad would have a larger screen for things like surfing the web, watching videos and reading e-books. Industry insiders suggest the iPad could give major competition to established devices such as the Kindle. At the time of the article no suggested retail price was given for the iPad. An image to compare the iPad to existing Apple devices is available at http://www.apple.com/ipad/

New to Blogging? Watch This Video!

Whole-House Surge Protection

It's important to protect all your electronic devices, not just computers, from surges. Printers, televisions, appliances, and computer preripherals all require protection. However it can be inconvenient to use individual surge protectors on all devices that need protection. One solution is to install a whole-house surge protector as shown in this photo. The device is installed by an electrician and is attached to your circuit breaker panel. Whole-house surge protectors function like other surge protection devices, but they protect all electrical devices in the house at once. The typical cost of $200 to $300 (installed) is generally less than buying individual surge protectors for every electrical device in your home.

AirMouse

The article located at: http://www.gizmag.com/airmouse-wearable-mouse/13993/ is about a new invention that promises to help the stresses of repetitive mouse use. The AirMouse, is it is known, is a revolutionary new mouse you wear like a glove. The AirMouse came as a result of one of the production company's founders getting a repetitive stress injury and trying an ergonomic mouse that wasn't quite so ergonomic. The AirMouse has a simple concept. It aligns naturally with your hand. It won't work until you lay your hand flat and allows for seamless transition between typing and scrolling. The AirMouse is slated to hit store shelves within 6 to 12 months at a price of $129.

My Favorte Blog

My favorite blog, and frankly the only one I read on a regular basis, is written by former professional wrestling manager Percy Pringle a.k.a. Paul Bearer. I watched him growing up leading some of the most outrageous characters the professional wrestling world has ever seen. His blog however is not entirely about the wrestling business. He does post stories from time to time about his travels, however the majority of his posts are related to his life in retirement and outside of the business. This gives his blog a more personal feel and inside look at a business few fans would ever get to experience firsthand.

Thoughts on Blogging

Though I had never posted a blog before today, I have known many others who blog quite frequently. I have never felt the need to put my personal thoughts out there for others to critique. Instead a hobby of mine has been html for a while. I have designed a few sites, though nothing major, which are for personal use. I have also helped to maintain a business website. Now that I have tried blogging, I still don't think it is something I would do on a regular basis, but it is definitely something different which I can use for a creative outlet.

Even though you can download the software from the Web site, you should also consider purchasing (for an additional fee) the software on DVD. This will make reinstalling the software much easier in the future in case you have a problem (such as your hard drive fails).
